AVID Elective Teachers
AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. Established more than 30 years ago with one teacher in one classroom, AVID today impacts more than 800,000 students in 44 states and 16 other countries/territories.
The AVID Elective targets students in the academic middle, with the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and come from groups traditionally under represented in higher education. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential.
AVID places these students on the college track, by having them take Honors and Advanced Placement classes. To support them in the rigorous coursework, AVID students learn organizational and study skills, develop critical thinking, learn to ask probing questions, receive academic help from peers and college tutors. The AVID students participate in enrichment and motivational activities to make their college dreams reality.
