Principal's Message: 2019 - 2020

Grizzly Family:

Welcome to the 2019 - 2020 school year!!  The Spring Valley High School Class of 2020 is only about nine months away from walking across the stage at the Orleans Arena and receiving their high school diploma, which will serve as the ticket to the next successful chapter of their lives!

This school year, the 16th in our school's history, we welcome the Class of 2023 to Spring Valley HS. The freshman will all be members of the “University of Hawaii House.”  The offices for the Hawaii House are in Rm. #802, and Mr. Salzman will serve as the Hawaii House Administrator.  Ms. Acosta and Ms. Douglas are the Hawaii House counselors.  Ms. Welling is the counselor for all of our IB Magnet students, and she is located in the Magnet Office inside of the main office.

Spring Valley HS operates on an eight-period, A/B Block schedule.  This schedule allows students to take a total of eight classes spread out over two days (A and B).  Students have periods one, three, five, and seven on A Days, and two, four, six, and eight on B Days; however, they only need one three-inch binder for all eight classes.

In addition, we are an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years and Diploma Program World School.  Every 9th and 10th grade student, not just our magnet students, at Spring Valley HS is an IB student.  We are excited to be graduating our first official IB DP class in May 2020!

Spring Valley HS is the only AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) National Demonstration School in Nevada.  Many of the research-based, AVID best practices are woven into the fabric of our school and are expected of all teachers and students.  Also, there are eight Career/Technical Education Programs available for students at Spring Valley HS.  Students can specialize in Business Management, Photography, Video Broadcasting, Theater Tech, Education & Training, Computer Science, Automotive Tech, and our newest addition – Military Science/JROTC – Go Navy!  These are all three-year strands and students can earn college credit by completing a CTE program.

To complement the outstanding academic opportunities at our school, we also offer an extensive number of clubs, athletics, and extra-curricular activities for our students.  Ms. Pittman, the Syracuse House Administrator in Rm. #908, is our school's Activities Administrator and Mr. Stack, in Rm. #202, is our Athletic Administrator.  If you have any questions regarding what clubs or athletic programs are available, please contact their offices directly.  Athletic Packets can be purchased at the School Bank for $30.

Finally, I'm excited to share that the Class of 2020 set a school record with a phenomenal increase on the average composite score on the ACT.  Unofficially, the school’s average composite increased from 17.2 to 18.2!  We are committed to continuing to build upon these gains and establish Spring Valley High School as the premier public high school in Las Vegas and the entire State of Nevada!  Go Grizz!
